For more than 200 years, America has celebrated our country’s independence with fireworks, parades and camaraderie. Enjoy these July Fourth fundamentals that can serve as great conversation starters during any celebration.
- The Revolutionary War began in 1775 as colonists fought to gain independence from Great Britain.
- Congress voted in favor of independence on July 2, 1776. John Adams believed July 2 was the official date to celebrate the birth of American independence and reportedly turned down July 4 event invitations in protest.
- An appointed committee – including Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman and Robert Livingston drafted a formal statement justifying our independence.
- Adams and Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826 – the Declaration of Independence’s 50th anniversary.
